Tom brings more than forty years of experience in safety assessment and toxicology. He is the founder and Principal of Science Strategies, LLC, a Salt Lake City–based consulting firm that guides companies of all sizes through the complex intersection of science, policy, and product development. Before establishing Science Strategies in 2001, Tom served as Vice President for Global Safety Assessment, Regulatory Affairs, and Sustainable Product Innovation at SC Johnson & Son.
Through Science Strategies, Tom and his team provides strategic guidance on safety and exposure assessment programs that support product development and regulatory decisionmaking. His work includes designing, monitoring, and interpreting toxicology and exposure studies, and applying these results to quantitative risk assessments for both cancer and noncancer endpoints. His expertise extends to areas such as developmental/reproductive toxicology, pharmacokinetics, and respiratory toxicology. Most recently he has led efforts to apply physiologically-based pharmacokinetic models (PBPK) to human neurotoxicology risk assessment and has embraced the application of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to assessment of respiratory tract irritation in humans.
Tom has extensive experience leading multi-year collaborative scientific initiatives across industry, and he regularly engages with regulatory agencies, academic researchers, and nongovernmental organizations worldwide. He has coauthored more than seventy peer reviewed publications and numerous abstracts for presentations at meetings worldwide.
He holds a B.S. in Biology from the University of Minnesota and a Ph.D. in Toxicology from the University of Michigan, and he is board-certified in toxicology by the American Board of Toxicology.
