Personal Care Products Council Statement on FDA Proposal to Expand Sunscreen Active Ingredient List

Washington, D.C. — “The Personal Care Products Council (PCPC) applauds the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) proposal to add bemotrizinol (BEMT) to the over-the-counter (OTC) sunscreen monograph as Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective (GRASE). This regulatory milestone marks the first new UV filter proposed as GRASE in more than 25 years, a significant advancement for the personal care products industry and consumers.

“Bemotrizinol offers broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection and has a strong global safety record. Its inclusion would complement the existing portfolio of effective U.S. sunscreen filters by adding an option that is already widely used internationally.

“We commend FDA for taking this important step and look forward to collaborating on future initiatives to modernize U.S. sunscreen regulation and strengthen skin cancer prevention.”
