International Cosmetic Ingredient Nomenclature Committee (INC)
The International Cosmetic Ingredient Nomenclature Committee (INC), sponsored by PCPC, is comprised of dedicated scientists from industry, academia, regulatory authorities and sister associations who volunteer their time to serve the global cosmetics industry community.
The International Cosmetic Ingredient Nomenclature Committee (INC), sponsored by the Personal Care Products Council (PCPC), is composed of dedicated scientists from industry, academia, government authorities and sister associations. These volunteers contribute their expertise in service to the global cosmetics industry.
The INC is responsible for assigning International Nomenclature Cosmetic Ingredient (INCI) names which are uniform, systematic names that are internationally recognized for identifying cosmetic ingredients. In the United States and many other countries, INCI names are required by regulation for cosmetic product ingredient labeling. As part of its work, the INC oversees the ongoing development of the INCI nomenclature system and ensures the accuracy and integrity of the information published in the web-based version of the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook, known as wINCI.
The INC convenes five times per year for two-day sessions to review applications for new INCI names and petitions for changes to existing ones. INCI names are assigned based on consensus and in accordance with the INCI Nomenclature Conventions. The INC also addresses other matters related to the International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook, nomenclature development and international harmonization efforts.
