2021 Virtual Science Symposium

Oct. 26-27, 2021

Registrants will be provided conference login instructions one week prior to the start of the conference. After the conference, all registrants will be provided instructions regarding how to download session recordings. Recordings will be available for 30 days. 

The annual Science Symposium, which will be held virtually for 2021, attracts more than 300 industry leaders and decision-makers. The robust program offers the industry a chance to learn, network, and engage with colleagues and speakers on game-changing insights facing microbiology, quality assurance, safety and the environment.

Open to both PCPC members and non-members, the 2021 Virtual Science Symposium is a great opportunity to learn from the experts and connect with colleagues and friends in the industry.

Linda M. Katz, M.D., M.P.H. Director, Office of Cosmetics and Colors, Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

FDA’s Continuing Priorities for Cosmetics

Dr. Linda M. Katz is the director of the Office of Cosmetics and Colors (OCAC) in the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN) at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates cosmetics and certifies colors used in foods, cosmetics, drugs, and devices. She will discuss FDA’s continuing priorities for cosmetics. Dr. Katz joined the FDA in 1989 in the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) first as a primary medical officer, and later she served as team leader and acting director of the Pilot Drug Evaluation Staff, which reviewed anti-rheumatic drugs, anesthetic agents and drugs of abuse. In 2002, Dr. Katz joined CFSAN as director for the Office of Cosmetics and Colors and additionally served 10 years as the acting chief medical officer. She received her M.D. from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, her Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and her bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania.

Jonathan B. Wiener, J.D. William R. and Thomas L. Perkins Professor of Law, Professor of Environmental Policy, Professor of Public Policy, Duke University

Learning to Manage the Multi-Risk World

Jonathan B. Wiener is the William R. and Thomas L. Perkins professor of law at Duke Law School; professor of environmental policy at the Nicholas School of the Environment and professor of public policy at the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University. He is the co-director of the Duke Center on Risk in Duke’s Science & Society Initiative. He is a past president of the Society for Risk Analysis (SRA), a faculty affiliate of the Harvard Center for Risk Analysis (HCRA), a member of the advisory committee of the International Risk Governance Council (IRGC), a member of the board of the Society for Benefit Cost Analysis (SBCA), and a University Fellow of Resources for the Future (RFF). He will discuss that we can—and have already begun to—strengthen risk analysis and policy outcomes by moving from a focus on the single to the multiple—multiple stressors, multiple impacts and multiple decisions.
