Biodiversity: New Rules and Realities of Ingredient Sourcing
Companies in the personal care products supply chain identify, use, or market ingredients found in countries all around the world. New rules and realities are emerging for how companies are permitted to access, use, and pay for these ingredients. These new rules and realities can apply to companies all along the supply chain - not just the initial acquirer of ingredients.
For instance, a growing number of governments have implemented "access and benefit sharing" laws and regulations. These laws may impose penalties for failure to comply, up to and including imprisonment. At the same time 193 countries signatory to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) are in the process of finalizing a legally-binding, international treaty in this area. Governments pressing for this international treaty are seeking compensation (what some call "reparations") paid for by users such as your companies for materials previously taken from their countries and used in products currently on the market.
Join us for a webinar to familiarize your company with:
- your consumers' views on ethical sourcing (79% say they are ready to boycott cosmetic brands who disregard environmental and ethical concerns according to the UEBT Biodiversity Barometer);
- examples of how national governments and NGOs are alleging acts of "biopiracy" or "bioprospecting" and suggestions for how your company can protect its brand;
- new, emerging rules (such as those in India, Brazil, South America, and under the CBD) and what they mean for your company; and
- the new global ingredient sourcing and usage realities your companies must contend with.
This webinar will be valuable for all companies along the personal care products supply chain -- from initial acquirers of ingredients to ingredient vendors to all users of ingredients. As this issue spans multiple corporate functions, we encourage participation from:
- Procurement
- Regulatory
- R&D
- Legal
- Government Affairs
- Corporate Social Responsibility
The webinar will be conducted by Peter Allgeier and Patricia Wu of C&M International, a consulting firm based in Washington DC that specializes in advising trade associations and companies on international policy and regulatory issues.
